One of the most confident and bravest among the men. He was among the shohada of Karbala and one of the most loyal Shias. He was Muslim Ibn Aqeel's messenger to Imam Hussain telling him that the people of Koofa had agreed to fight with Imam Hussain. On the day of Ashoora, nobody came out to fight him because of his bravery until Omar Ibn Sa'ad shouted at his army saying: What is the matter with you all, throw stones at him. After he was killed everyone tried taking his head to get the Prize.

Abdulla Ibn Abbass

Among the people who tried to stop the Imam from going to Karbala, when he was that the Imam would not change his mind he became sad. He was among the first to know of Imam Hussain's death. On the day of Ashoora, he saw in his sleep that his perfume had changed to blood, so he knew that Imam Hussain had been killed. Ibn Abbass was the Prophet (PBUH) and Imam Ali's cousin. He was a very big figure in history. He lost his vision at the end of his life. He died in Al Ta'ef in Saudi Arabia in 68 Hijreh at the age of 70. Mohammed Ibn Al Hanefya prayed on his body.

Anees Ibn Ma'qel Al Asbahy

One of the Shohada of Karbala. He fought the enemies after the noon of Ashoora after the istishad of Jon. He fought with bravery and killed 20.

Aslam, the Turkish slave

Among the shohada'a of Karbala, he was originally from Turkey. He was well known for throwing arrows, at the same time he was a writer for the Imam Hussain. He read the Qur'an and knew Arabic well. When he was killed in Karbala, the Imam placed his face on Aslam's face, Aslam opened his eyes and saw the Imam's eyes and smiled.

Atiyya

He is always told of besides Jabir Ibn Abdullah. They were the first to visit Imam Hussain's grave 40 days after his death. Because Jabir Ibn Abdullah Al Ansari was blind, Atiyya guided him. It is said that Ahl Albait saw them when coming back from Al Sham. Atiyya Ibn Saad Ibn Junada was among the best Shia in science and speech. He was born in Koofa in the ruling of Imam Ali and it was he who named him. In the days of Al Hajjaj, he was chased because of his loyalty to Imam Ali. Finally he was caught in Persia. He was told to swear at Imam Ali, but he refused to. Al Hajjaj then ordered to whip him 400 times and beat his beard and head. He died in 111 in Koofa.

Awn Ibn Abdulla Ibn Jaafer

Son of Sayyeda Zayneb. He was killed along with his brother. He followed Imam Hussain until he reached him in Karbala. He was killed while fighting alone.

Awn Ibn Jaafer Ibn Abi Talib

The son of Jaafer Ibn Abi Talib. His mother was Asma'a Bint Amees and was born in Habasha. When his father Jaafer was killed in the war of Mo'teh, the Prophet (PBUH) asked everyone to bring his sons (Awn, Mohammed, and Abdulla) to him. He then ordered for them to cut their hair and said: "Mohammed, why he looks like our uncle Abi Talib, and Awn, why he looks alike both in outer beauty and inner soul. Imam Ali married him to his daughter Umm Kolthoom. He stayed with Imam Hassan and Hussain even until he came to Karbala. He was killed in Karbala at the age 56!

Bishr Ibn Amro Alhadhrami

Also among the shohada'a of Karbala, he was one of the few people left to be killed in Karbala. He is originally from "Hadhramout" in Yemen. He was known for his loyalty to the Imam. Although his son was in the prisons of "Alrey" when he was in Karbala, he stayed and fought with the Imam. Finally, he was killed in the first Hamla.

Borayr Ibn Khodhair Alhamadani

Among the shohada'a of Karbala, he was known for reading the Qura'an and teaching it to others. Burayr was among the bravest men in Alkoofa. Originally from the tribe of "Hamadan", he was called "Sayyed AlQurra'a" because he always used to pray and read the Qura'an in the mosque of Alkoofa. In Karbala, he tried to guide Omar Ibn Sa'ad on the right path and leave Yazeed Ibn Mo'aweeya, but to no avail. He was killed early in Karbala right after Istishad Al Hor Ibn Yazeed Alyazeedy.

(Al) Dhahak Ibn Abdulla Al Mushrefi

He was with Imam Hussain in Karbala. When he saw the number of people killed among Imam Hussain's army, he came to the Imam and ask permission to leave him. The Imam told him to go. A group of Omar Ibn Sa'ad's army followed him but then let him escape to wherever he was going to. Unfortunately, he missed his chance of being among the shohada of Karbala. It is said that he was among the companions of Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain.

Habib Ibn Muthaher

He was a loyal and close friend of the the prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H.), and was originally from the tribe of Bani Asad. He fought with Al Imam Ali Ibn Abi talib in all his battles and the Imam Ali tought him "Ilm Almanaya was Albalaya" which means that Habib could predict deaths of poeple. He took the bay'a from Muslim Ibn Aqeel in Alkoofah. He also was a close friend of Maythem Altammar who also knew Ilm Almanaya wal Balaya".

Hafhaf Ibn Mohanned Alrasibi

A very brave man who was with Imam Ali in his three battles. He was originally from Al Basra in Iraq. In the battle of Sifeen, Imam Ali made him the ruler over the tribe of Azd. After Imam Ali, he stayed with Imam Hassan and then Imam Hussain. When he heard about Imam Hussain's departure to Karbala, he walked from Al Basra to Karbala, but the battle was over so he took his knife and attacked Omar Ibn Sa'ad's until he was killed.

Hakeem Ibn Tufail

He fought Al Imam Al Hussain in Karbala. He was the one who cut Abu Fadhl Al Abbass's left arm after Zayd Ibn Al Arqam had cut his right arm.

Hameed Ibn Muslim AlAzdi

The person who is responsible for us knowing all that happened in Karbala. He was among Omar Ibn Sa'ad's army against Al Imam Al Hussain. He also had a fight with Alshimr to not burn the tents of the Imam. He was among the Tawabeen. He also was in the service of the Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain.

Harmaleh

Harmalah Ibn Kahil Al Asadi Alkoofi, the killer of the radheeh (Ali Alasghar/Abdulla alradheeh) "infant" of the Imam while in his arms in Karbala. Al Imam Alsajjad prayed to Allah for Harmala to die, at the same moment Almokhtar in Alkoofa ordered to cut Harmala's arms and legs and throw him in the fire.

(Al) Hussain Ibn Numair

The leaders of the Omaweeyeen. Originally from the tribe of Kindah, he was an enemy of the family of Al Imam Ali. In Sifeen, he stood buy Mu'aweeya Ibn Abi Sufyan against Al Imam Ali, and in Karbala he stood with Yazeed Ibn Mo'aweeya against Al Imam al Hussain. He was the one to take Habib Ibn Muthaher's head and place it on his horse and run in Alkoofa with it. He was killed by Alqassim Ibn Habib, Habib Ibn Muthaher's son.

Jaafar Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Talib

The son of imam Ali and brother of Abo Al Fadhl Al Abbass. He was killed in Karbala at the age of 19 by 'Hani Ibn Thabeet Al Hadhrami' or 'Khawli Ibn Yazeed'.

Jabir Ibn Abdulla Al Ansari

Jabir, along with Atiya, were among the greatest shi'as. They came to Karbala after Al Imam Al Hussain's shahadah. Jabir was born before 15 years of the Hijra in the Medeenah. He was originally from the tribe of Khazraj. his father was killed in the battle of Ohod with the Prophet (P.B.U.H.). He fought in 18 of the Prophet's battles, and in Sifeeen with the Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib. He was struck with blindness at the end of his life. He was killed by Alhajjaj because he was among the loyal people to Ahl Albait (78 hijra) at the age of 91.

Jibleh Ibn Ali Al Sheybani

Among the bravest in Al Koofa. He was killed in the first hamla in Ashoora. He fought in Sifeen with Imam Ali (as). He stood beside Moslim Ibn Aqeel in Al Koofa, and after Moslim was killed he went to hide in one his tribes houses until Imam Hussain came to Koofa

Jon, the black slave

He belonged to Abu Thar Akghifary, his full name is John Ibn Jowey. He returned to the Madeenah after Abu Thar was killed and became loyal to the Ahl Albait. He was in the service of Al Imam Ali, Al Imam Al Hassan, Al Imam Al Hussain, and Al Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain. He came to Karbala with Al Imam Ali Al Hussain, and fixed weapons. He fought with the Imam until he was killed. The Imam then sat on his dead body and pray to Allah for him.

Jonadah Ibn Ka'ab Alansari

Among the shohada'a of Karbala, Jonadah was originally from the tribe of Alkhazraj. He went with the Imam from Makka to Karbala and was killed with his son in the first Hamla.

Jondob Ibn Hojair Alkoholani

He was among the shohada'a of Karbala and a close friend of Al Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib. He was from Alkoofa and came to Karbala and fought with the Imam. He was killed in the first Hamla.

(Al) Komayt Ibn Zayd Al Asadi

A famous Poet among the Arabs. His poems always had to do with Ahl Albait and the killing of Imam Hussain in Karbala. He was very emotional with the sons of Bani-Hashim. He was born on 60 Hijreh and died on 126 Hijreh. He always defended Ahl Albait. He was born in the same year Imam Hussain was killed in Karbala. Because of Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain's du'aa, he became a shaheed at the end of his life.

Layla Bint Abi Morra Al-Thaqafi

She is the wife of Imam Hussain and the mother of Ali Akbar and also one of the purest women ever. Her name is seldom mentioned in the Maqtel of Imam Hussain

Mane'e Ibn Zyad

He was among the shohada in Karbala and among Imam Hussain's people. It is also said that his name was Mane'e Ibn Raqqad. His name was also mentioned in the 'Zyarat Al Rajabeeyeh'.

Mohammed Ibn Al Ash'ath

Among the companions of Obaid Illah Ibn Zyad. When Muslim Ibn Aqeel came to Koofa and entered Taw'a's house, he told her about all that happened to him. Taw'a's son heard the conversation and in the morning went and told Mohammed Ibn Al Ash'ath who then told Obaid Illah Ibn Zyad. Instantly, Muslim's house was surrounded!

Mohteshem Al Kashany

He live in the beginning of the Safawy period and wrote poems praising Ahl Albait. He died in 996 Hijreh. One of his most famous poems are the ones that are read bye many people on the nights of Muharram or written on clothes and hung on the Ma'atem/Masjed walls. He became so popular because of his many emotional writings about what happened in Karbala.

Mohammed Ibn Al Hanafya

His father was Imam Ali (as) and Al Hanafya is his mother's Last Name. She was Khawla bint Jaafer Ibn Qays Ibn Salma Ibn Tha'lebeh, and her son Mohammed was among the bravest in the Shia. In the war of Al-Jamal he held the flag of Imam Ali's army. He witnessed the Nahrawan. When Imam Hussain refused to accept Yazeed as the new ruler of the Muslims, Mohammed Ibn Al Hanafya was among the people who disagreed with Imam Hussain's going to Kabala. He wrote his will and gave it to Mohammed. After the martyrdom in Karbala, Mohammed was lonely like everyone who didn't go with Imam Hussain and in 66 Hijreh, Al Mokhtar Ibn Obaid Illah accepted him as an Imam and took control of Iraq by his name. He died in 81 Hijreh in the days of Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan.

(Al) Mokhtar Al Thaqafi

Among the ones who fought Obaid Illah Ibn Zyad after the killing of the Imam in Karbala. His mother was Dawma bint Wahab. He was born in the year of the Hijreh and came with his father to Madeeneh. He was a very brave and courageous man. When Muslim Ibn Aqeel came to Koofa, he offered him his house to stay in, and after Muslim was killed Obaid Illah Ibn Zyad put him in the same prison Maythem Al Tammar was in. He was killed in a fight with Abdullah Ibn Al Zubair's army. He rests next to Muslim Ibn Aqeel.

Muslim Ibn Oqbeh

When the people of Madeeneh rejected and fought the Ommaweyeens after Ashoora, Mo'aweyeh set up an army leaded by Muslim Ibn Oqbeh to go and scare the people of Madeeneh. Muslim went to Madeeneh and killed many of the Prophet's (PBUH) companions. He was later known in history as Musrif because of his many bad acts.

Muhajer Ibn Aws

Among Omer Ibn Sa'ad's army. When he saw Al Hor Ibn Yazeed Al-Riahy come closer to Al Imam Al Hussain's tents he came up to him and said: 'Why Hor, if I was told who is the strongest in Koofa I would have said you, why do you like so weak now?' and Al Hor answered him: 'I am choosing between (Janneh and Al-Nar) Heaven and Hell.

Nafi'i Ibn Hilal

He is Nafi'i Ibn Nafi'i Ibn Jamal Ibn Sa'ad and one of the shohada in Karbala. He was a known figure in Koofa and an excellent reciter of Imam Ali's Riwayat. He had been with Imam Ali in three of his battles: Sifeen, Nahreawan, and Al Jamal. After Moslim was killed in Koofa, he silently hid and joined Imam Hussain and came with him to Karbala. In Karbala, Nafi'i spoke with enthusiasm to Omar Ibn Sa'ads army. They in return threw stones at him until they broke his arm and then they came and took him to Shimr who killed him. Some say his name was Hilal Ibn Nafi'i.

Obaid Allah Ibn Ziyad

The ruler of Alkoofa, and by his orders Al Imam Al Hussain was killed. He was known as Ibn (son of) Marjanah, referring to his mother because nobody knew who his father was-his mother had slept with 6 men. He killed Muslim Ibn Aqeel by throwing him from the top of Dar Al Imarah. He was the ruler of Khorasan in 54 Hijra.

Othman Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Talib

One of the shohada of Karbala. He was the brother of Abbas, his mother was Om-Al Baneen (Fatima Al Kilabyyeh). He said that his father Imam Ali had said: 'I called him Othman because of my brother Othman Ibn Madh'oon'. In Karbala he was hit by an arrow by Khawly Ibn Yazeed so he fell on the ground, then another man came and killed him. He was 21 when he was killed in Karbala.

Qarib (Mawlah of Imam Hussain)

One of the shohada of Karbala. His mother is Fakeeheh, a maid in Imam Hussain and his wife Rabab's house. He came with Imam Hussain to Karbala and was killed on the day of Ashoora.

(Al) Qassim Ibn Al Hassan

Son of Imam Hassan (as). He was a young boy who hadn't entered manhood yet. when asked how do you see the death that is in front of you, he replied: 'Sweeter than honey'. He asked permission from Imam Hussain to enter the battle. When Imam Hussain agreed, he fought and killed many people, until he was hit and fell to the ground. Imam Hussain ran to him and told the others to come and take him to the tents because he didn't have the power to. He was known for his beauty.

(Al) Rabab

The daughter of Imr'e'a Al Qays Ibn Oday, and wife of imam Hussain. She was the mother of Sakeeneh and Ali Al-Asgher (Abdulla). After the the massacre in Karbala, she came back with the women and held a ma'atem for 1 year in Madeeneh. She always cried for her brother and never sat in a shaded place until she died after a year of imam Hussain's death.

Sahl Ibn Saad

One of the Sahabeh of the Prophet (PBUH) and Shia of Imam Ali. He saw the women of Ahl Albait coming towards Damascus, he went to one of them (Sakeena) and told her who he was and if she wanted something. Sakeena told him to tell the holder of Imam Hussain's head in front of them so that people would look at the head and not at the women of Ahl Albait. Sahl payed 400 Dinars to the holder of the head to hold it in front of the women. He died at the age of 96 or 100 on 88 Hijreh.

Sarjoon (Sir Jon)

He is Sarjoon (Sir Jon) Ibn Mansoor. He was a Christian from Al Sham. He served as Mo'aweyeh and Yazeed's consultant in government matters. He suggested to Yazeed to have Obaid Illah ibn Zyad a ruler on koofeh. In the time of Marwan Ibn Al Hakem's ruling he was tricked and removed from his position.

Shabib Ibn Abdullah

One of the shohada of Karbala. he was among the bravest in Koofa. He joined Imam Hussain along with Saif and Malik (the sons of Saree'e). He was killed in the first hamla before noon. He was one of the Sahabeh of the Prophet (PBUH) and fought with imam Ali 3 of his battles.

Shareeh Al Qadhi

A judge in Koofa originally from Yemen. He would do anything to please the Omaweyeens. In the days of Omar's rule he was give his place as judge of Koofa and he stayed judge of Koofa for 60 years. Imam Ali kept him in his place but became angry once because Shareeh had not done something right. He was known as a user of his place as a judge and Islamic figure. He was used in many ways by the government because of him being a judge.

Omeya Ibn Sa'ad Alta'aey

He was killed with Al Imam Al Hussain in Karbala and was killed in the first Hamla. He was known for his courage in Alkoofa was a close friend to Al Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (A.S.). Omeya was also among the people who fought with the Al Imam Ali in the battle of Sifeen. He joined Al Imam al Hussain on the 8th of Muharam.

Al Tawaboon

After the shahadah of Al Imam al Hussain, the shi'a of Karbala realized their mistake and were determined to do something to kill the killersof Al Imam Al Hussain and ask forgiveness. They chose Sulaimaan Ibn Sard Alkhoza'eey as their leader. They secretely started gathering weapons and money in order to be able to fight. During this period, Yazeed Ibn Mo'aweeya died. when they were ready, they came out in the time when Marwan Ibn Alhakam was ruler and were about 4000 people. they walked all the way to Al Imam Al Hussain's Dhareeh asking Allah for forgiveness. Finally they went to Alshaam; and there they fought one of the worst battles in history. They could not beat the powerful Army of Alshaam, so they cam back to Alkoofa at night. Among the shohada'a in the battle in Alshaam were: Sulaimaan Ibn Sard, Abdulla Ibn Sa'ad Al Azdi, Abdulla Ibn Wa'el, and Rifa'ah Ibn Shadad.

Yazeed Ibn Mo'aweeya

Probably one of the dirtiest men in all of history. He was responsible for the jenoside in Karbala. He was born on 25 Hijra. He played with dogs and monkeys and didn't believe in judgement day (Yawm AlQiyamah). He was ruler over the muslims for 3 years. In the first year he killed Al Imam Al Hussain; in the second he commited a jenoside in Al Madeenah where he killed thousands of Muslims; and in the third year of his ruling, he attacked and demolished the Ka'abah, the house of Allah.

Yazeed Ibn Thabeet AlAbdy

Among the shohada of Karbala and a loyal Shia to Ahl Albait. He was a companion of Abo Al Aswad Al Do'ely and one of the best in his tribe. He had 10 sons, but only 2 of them and himself went to Karbala. His sons were killed in the first Hamla (attack) and he was killed in the 1-to-1 battle.

Zayd Ibn Al-Arqam

One of the Sahaba of the Prophet (PBUH) who fought with him on some of his battles. At the time of Ashoora he was a very old man. It is said that when Imam Hussain's head was brought into Dar Al Imareh, Ibn Zyad started caning the head. Zayd got up and said to Ibn Zyad: Stop hitting those lip, by God which there is no God but him I have seen the Prophet (PBUH) kissing those lips. He then got up and ran home crying. He died in Koofa on 68 Hijra.

Sayyeda Zayneb Bint Ali (as)

She is the one who carried the story of Karbala to the world and stayed with Imam Hussain all the way throughout his life. She is the daughter of Imam Ali and Sayyeda Fatima Al Zahra. She was born on 5 Jamadi Aloowlah 5 Hijreh in Madeeneh. she was born after Imam Hussain (as) and one of her names was: 'Aqeela Bani Hashim'. She was known for her bravery and attachment to her very dear brother Imam Hussain. She was married to her cousin Jaafer Ibn Abdulla. She had 2 sons: Mohammed and Awn who were both killed in Karbala. Even after Imam Hussain was killed, Sayyeda Zayneb took care of the women until they came back to Madeeneh. She went to al Sham with her husband and there she died on 63/65 Hijreh.

(Al) Alqami

A river that branches from the Euphrates river (Furat). Beside it, Abo Al Fadhl Al Abbas was killed on Ashoora. Alqam means sour in Arabic. It is told to every tree that is sour, or water that is sour an Alqam. It is used very often in poetry when talking about Al Abbas, is thirst, and his chopped off arms.

(Al) Ghadhiriyyeh

Named on Ghadireh from Bani Asad which is a village in the edges of Koofa near Karbala. It was established after the tribe of Bani Asad settled there. Imam Al Baqer said: "Al Ghadhiriyyeh is where Allah spoke to Prophet Mosa (as), where he saved Prophet Nooh (as), it is one of the purest places on earth and therefore Allah located his Prophets there, so visit our graves in Al Ghadhiriyyeh." It is also said that Imam Hussain bought this piece of land for 60,000 Dirhams and then gifted it to the land owners if they agreed to guide people to his grave and give them food for three days.

Damishk (Damuscus)

The largest city in Syria. It was a scientific and historic city opened by the Muslims in 13 Hijreh. Mo'aweeyeh ruled it for 31 years. In it is the Omewee Mosque, one of the largest Islamic mosques. Here, there is the grave of Ruqeyyeh the daughter of imam Hussain. After Karbala, the women were brought to this city to Yazeed. Because of the lies the Omawyeen (the ruling family), the people of Al Sham came to hate Imam Ali. For example, they would take a newly born goat and give it to a small boy. The boy would be with this goat for a year or so, then caped man would come and kill the goat. Another man would then tell the crying child that Imam Ali came and killed the goat. La Ilah Illa Allah!

Al Qadisyyeh

The name of a place before Koofa. Here the well known battle of Qadisyyeh occured between the Muslims and Persians in the time of the 2nd Khalifa where the Muslims won. Here also Al Hussain Ibn Numair (Le'anehoo Allah) caught Al Imam Al Hussain's messenger Qais Ibn Musehher and sent him to Ibn Zyad. When Qais heard this he ripped Imam Hussain's book with his teeth so that the enemy would not get certain names written in the book.

Deir Al Rahab (a Christian's cave)

When the women came back from Karbala with all the heads of the shohada held up on spears they passed by a Christian man's praying place. The man came out and asked who they were. After a little talk he saw Imam Hussain's head. He agreed with the people holding the heads that he would pay them 10,000 Dirhams in order for him to have the head for 1 night. That night he washed the head and saw a light form around it. Because of many other miracles he saw from it, he became a muslim and Shia loyal to Ahl Albait. He served Ahl Albait until he was killed.

Al Qatqatanyyeh

A place near Koofa. It is one of many houses and in it was the prison of No'man. The area between Al Qatqatanyyeh and Al Qadesyyeh was blocked by Obaid Illah Ibn Zyad so that nobody could follow and join Imam Hussain (as).

Another name for Karbala. It is known by this name because of the shahadah of the Imam and what happened to the women on that day.

Tho Al-Janah

The name of Imam Hussain's horse. White in color, Tho Al-Janah was a true Arab horse. when Imam Hussain was killed on Ashoora, his horse jump and kicked the enemy and killed some of them. He then came back to the tents screaming and hitting his feet on the ground. It is said that later on he went to the Furat (Euphrates) river and threw himself inside and disappeared.

Fetros

An angel with a broken wing that had fallen on an island. when Imam Hussain was born, he came with the help Jibrael to the Prophet (PBUH) to Imam Hussain's cot and rubbed his side to it. Suddenly Allah granted him a new wing. He went into the sky and promised that whoever Prays for Imam Hussain I will reach it to Al Hussain, and whoever comes to visit him I will reach it to him.. Ibn Abbass said that this angel is known in the skies as Ghulaam (slave) Al Hussain Ibn Ali.

Sand of Karbala

It is a small block of sand (clay) usually in a rectangular or circular shape. One who prays usually places it in front of him and places his fore head on it. This is a sign of love for Imam Hussain (as) and bringing yourself down to the lowest rank possible in front of Allah. Imam Jaafer al Sadiq prayed on Imam Hussain's Turba (sand from Karbala) and so did most of the other A'Imah.
